Clean with vinegar

August 31, 2022

Cleaning with vinegar is popular, but what exactly is vinegar? It is simply a mixture of water and acetic acid in different concentrations, where the most common mixture with 12% vinegar is called vinegar spirit and it is also the most common in for example grocery stores (but 24% is also common, a mixture also called pure vinegar ). Should you then clean with vinegar 12% or 24%? It’s mostly a matter of keeping track of the concentration of the vinegar you use, but in most cases, it’s the white spirit you use most easily (ie the kind of vinegar that’s 12%).

Vinegar has a strong ability to keep bacteria and mold away and is also good at removing limescale, for example, coffee makers and kettles – but always remember that vinegar can have a corrosive effect, so it should be handled carefully and be sure to keep it away from children (drinking vinegar or getting vinegar in the eyes means the risk of corrosive damage).

Housewife tips vinegar

Vinegar is antibacterial and can be good against stains and limescale deposits, so it’s easy to understand why many home remedies contain vinegar.

For example, you can use vinegar to clean and get rid of bad odors in the refrigerator (wipe out the refrigerator with a mixture of water and vinegar) and you can also clean the litter box in the same way.

But in addition to vinegar being good for bad odors, vinegar is good in a variety of ways around the home when it comes to cleaning and tidying.

10 good tips on how you can clean with vinegar in an efficient and environmentally friendly way:

  1. Clean the drain with vinegar: sprinkle two teaspoons of baking soda down the drain, then slowly pour in half a deciliter of vinegar, and finally let everything work for 20 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with hot water.
  2. Clean dishwasher: take about one deciliter of vinegar and pour it into the bottom of the dishwasher and then run a normal program, vinegar can both remove bad odors and dissolve grease (but remember that even vinegar has a strong smell, so you suffer from allergy or respiratory problems, it may be better to use citric acid).
  3. Vinegar as a rinse aid: vinegar makes the laundry softer and removes bad odors and also cleans the machine at the same time. Mix 1 dl vinegar 24% with 4 dl water or 2 dl vinegar 12% with 3 dl water. Mix in a bottle or other storage container. Pour two tablespoons of your mixture into the fabric softener compartment and wash.
  4. Vinegar as window cleaner: take a tablespoon of vinegar in a liter of water. Mix and then spray on the glass and finally wipe with a microfiber cloth.
  5. Vinegar for stale towels: remove bad odors by washing them in hot water and one deciliter of vinegar (but without detergent) and then once more in hot water and half a deciliter of bicarbonate.
  6. Vinegar is good for descaling your coffee maker, do this: pour 1 dl of vinegar (24%) and 6 dl of water into the coffee maker – or 2 dl of vinegar (12%) and 5 dl of water – into the water container of your coffee maker. Brew through half of this mixture and then turn off the brewer and wait ten minutes before turning the brewer back on so all the liquid goes through. Pour out the liquid and now brew through the coffee maker with clean water three or four times so that all the taste of vinegar disappears.
  7. Vinegar for cleaning sooty glass doors on the stove: clean with a sponge dipped in vinegar.
  8. Vinegar for a clean and fresh dishcloth: put the dishcloth in a mixture of water and vinegar, it removes both bacteria and odor.
  9. Clean microwave with vinegar: fill a mug with a quarter of vinegar 24%, then fill it with water almost to the top. Place the cup in the microwave and run on full power for one minute, then take the cup out and wipe your microwave clean with paper towels.
  10. Clean the shower and shower walls with vinegar and washing-up liquid: take equal parts of liquid washing-up liquid and finger-warm vinegar (12%) and pour into a spray bottle, the vinegar first and then the detergent. Be careful not to inhale the fumes when heating your vinegar. Spray and leave for half an hour, then rub with a sponge and finish by rinsing with cold water.

However, there is a good trick to avoid moldy and boring strawberries!

Do this:

  1. Mix 1 part vinegar and 9 parts water in a bowl.
  2. Add the strawberries and leave them in the mixture for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Carefully pour the strawberries into a colander so they drain.
  4. Rinse with water a couple of times.
  5. Place in the fridge until you are going to eat your strawberries.

Now they can last a week or two when mold spores and other things are gone. It can also work on other berries such as raspberries. If you don’t have vinegar at home, you can also try vinegar.

Wash with vinegar

Vinegar is not only good for cleaning, but it is also a powerful and environmentally friendly agent for tougher and smelly laundry. The vinegar has the property of reducing bad odors and other odors and will also make the clothes soft without you having to use other chemicals.

Vinegar can also be used in the washing machine as well as when washing by hand but is kinder to the environment than a regular detergent.

Vinegar (or acetic acid) is mild and should not damage washable fabrics, but at the same time strong to dissolve dirt and remove bad odors.

Vinegar also acts as a mild bleaching agent, which can make garments that have become gray and dull look fresher – but remember not to wash garments that you do not want to be brightened with vinegar.

Do this: pour about 1 dl of vinegar into the fabric softener container of your washing machine or add it manually at the beginning of the rinse cycle when washing with vinegar in the washing machine. If you wash by hand, pour 1 dl of vinegar into a bowl of warm water and let the clothes sit overnight, and then wash as usual.

For those of you who exercise a lot, vinegar can be particularly good at removing sweat odors and making your training clothes fresh again. You can also remove old and musty odors from running shoes and other training shoes. Here’s how: put the shoes in a vinegar bath for a few hours. Mix 2 dl of vinegar in a tub of water, put the shoes in the bath, and make sure the liquid penetrates the fabric. Afterward, rinse the shoes with clean water and then ensure that they are allowed to dry in slow in a dry and reasonably warm places.
